Jens Carelius
Jens Carelius from Sandvika, right outside Oslo, released his debut album “The First Songs” in January 2008 to critical acclaim. Late summer 2009 came the follow up, “The Beat of the Travel” on the newly started record label Viking Records.
“The Beat of the Travel” is a natural forward development, where the quiet and folk inspired expression from the debut is expanded with larger arrangements and a more melodic touch. The development towards this record has come as a direct result of increased concert activity in the wake of the previous release. Live, Cornelius found himself at home in a band setting, something which to a considerable extent has shaped the songs he’s written for this album. Carelius’ perhaps most distinct facet is still his focus on strong lyrics. The musical expression on the album varies along with the texts, you will discover songs presented only with folk guitar, yet also waltzes with wind and strings, all the way through to pop and rock tracks.
The record is built up as a journey with expansive contrasts between the songs, hence the name “The Beat of the Travel”.
“Promising debut, impressive follow up. (….) An album which will strongly aspire to many an “end of year” list. And we’re talking about a sound you have almost definitely not heard from a Norwegian artist previously. It all sounds extraordinarily organic…" (Øyvind Rønning, Dagbladet on "The Beat of the Travel- 6/6)
