First confirmed speaker: Kim Gordon
We are delighted to announce the legendary Kim Gordon as the first confirmed speaker in the 2013 by:Larm Conference. Her example has made her a feminist icon and an inspirational figure. Such a diverse career will make for a fascinating Q&A session at by:Larm and we look forward to welcoming her to Oslo.
Even before she took the momentous step of co-founding Sonic Youth in 1981, Kim Gordon had been involved with avant garde rock scene in Harry Crews, as well as becoming a correspondent for Artforum magazine. In Sonic Youth she carved out a distinctive role as bassist, guitarist and vocalist, with one of the most distinctive and chilling voices in modern rock. She also pursued many projects in her own right: including her group Free Kitten and collaborations with everyone from Lydia Lunch and Courtney Love to Jim O’Rourke and Mike Watt. Beyond music, she has continued to make and curate art, and has exhibited installations at the influential Her Noise show in London and in collaboration with Jutta Koether, and created the multimedia performance piece Perfect Partner in 2005. She has made film appearances including Gus van Sant’s last Days, has modelled for Calvin Klein, and also has her own clothing lines, X-Girl and Mirror/Dash.
